2 Jun 2008: Learning the Guitar

Robyn on the flamenco guitar

Hooray, it's school holiday again!

Inspired by The Gipsy Kings, Robyn learnt some notes on the classical guitar from Daddy.

Robyn uses the Camacho flamenco guitar which Daddy Alvin bought in Madrid, Spain in 1988. Daddy Alvin uses the Khono Professional classical guitar.

8-14 Jun 2008: Rice Farming Experience at Chiang Rai

We kick-started our family vision project - Colours of Life - with a rice farming experience in Chiang Rai, Thailand.

It began with an idea born during our last year's trip to Chiang Rai with Uncle Kitt.

After months of planning, we made it happened finally.

The Singapore rice farmers at Chiang Rai

Robyn and Jin planting the rice seedlings

We experienced the life of rice farmers for a week and learnt from Grandfather Gun and Uncle Kitt the A-to-Z of rice planting.

The planting season for rice is June/July, while the harvesting season is in October/November.

We learnt that to reap, we must first sow; and to sow with love and gratitude in our hearts.

We also learnt that the sowing and reaping seasons are not the same. We must cultivate the virtue of patience and not expect instant gratification.

The Golden Triangle

Uncle Kitt took us to visit the Golden Triangle where Thailand, Myanmar and Laos meet at the confluence of 2 rivers - Mekong and Mae Sai.

At the Opium Museum, we learnt about opium and the history of the opium trade. I don't like drugs!

Kitt, Grandfather Gun (Kitt's father) and Alvin jointly designed the Rice Farming Experience to be held at their family rice farm. They christened the farm as Tigerland Rice Farm. The Rice Farming Experience is the first of many experiences under the Colours of Life project. Alvin also designed the www.tigerlandricefarm.com website.

The Yongs shall return to Tigerland Rice Farm in November 2008 for the rice harvesting season.

See you soon, Tigerland Rice Farm and all the wonderful people in Chiang Rai.
